Almond Flour Chocolate Donuts


These chocolate donuts are simple and have a nice light cakey texture.  They are, without a doubt, kid approved.

Almond Flour Chocolate Donuts

  • 1/4 cup coconut oil or butter
  • 1/3 cup honey
  • 1/3 cup cocoa powder
  • 3 eggs
  • 3/4 cup almond flour, packed
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • dash of sea salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon apple cider vinegar
  1. Preheat your oven to 350.
  2. Melt together coconut oil and honey.
  3. Whisk in cocoa powder.
  4. Whisk in eggs, one at a time.
  5. Add dry ingredients, combine well.
  6. Stir in vinegar.
  7. Pour into donut pan.  Bake for 12-15 minutes.
  8. Invert onto cooling rack.
  9. Dip in chocolate glaze.  (recipe below)
  10. Sprinkle with coconut flakes, gf sprinkles, or chopped nuts.

*yields 8 large donuts ( a standard donut pan is for 6 donuts, either use the extra batter for a cupcake for later or reuse your donut pan after the first six are done baking)

Chocolate Glaze

  • 1 oz unsweetened chocolate
  • 2 tablespoons coconut oil or butter
  • 2-3 tablespoons honey
  1. Gently melt together the chocolate, oil and  honey.  Whisk until smooth.  For a thin glaze use immediately, or for a thicker ganache texture allow to cool down and thicken.

I always start out using 2 tablespoons of the honey, and depending on what other toppings I am adding I may or may not use all of the honey.  Just do it to taste.  It will still work, I promise!

  17. It’s funny to think that a chocolate donut can be healthy, and while I’m sure it’s still not the healthiest, it’s gluten free properties sure do lighten the load. Gonna make these…

    Your recipes look amazing!!! Quick question, You said you follow the SCD so I was wondering do you eat the chocolate or cocoa powder in the recipes. Most people can’t eat that or it is actually illegal following the SCD. Just wondering if you mainly follow Gluten free and healed yourself where other illegals don’t bother you anymore. Also I can’t have butter in my recipes (wish I could it would taste awesome) and I use Ghee in the cooking but I don’t like Ghee to pour over pancakes or other foods. It has a distinct taste. Not like butter. What else do you think I could use? One more question, I followed SCD recipes and specifically one for Chocolate Chip Cookies. It uses 1/2 cup oil and honey etc. Well my cookies GREW very wide and they are very oily. I followed there recipe to the T but there cookies looked like regular choc. chip but mine were huge and very lacey looking and like I said Oily. What do you think is the reason? Keep up the great recipes I am going to try a lot of them. Thanks so much

    I made these donuts tonight to serve to my family for breakfast tomorrow. They are so good! I want to eat them all right now, but then we won’t have anything for breakfast. :) I also made your pita recipe when my preschooler’s class was studying the letter K and their special snack was a “kangaroo pouch pita”. It was SO nice to have a gluten free pita recipe for my son to enjoy along with the class. Thank you for your great recipes! I am excited to try even more of them.

    Really, really good even without a glaze. I bought a donut pan at the Salvation Army years ago and only used it once – I’ve thought about tossing it often, but now I’m glad I didn’t. I’ll be making these again. I used 8 packs of truvia instead of honey as I’m avoiding sugars. I did add an oz or two of water to make up the loss of liquids. Even the family liked these. Oh,and we also followed the SCD diet for almost a year- very strictly and it helped our 2 kiddos out a lot! So excited to use some of your other recipes, since we still try to follow that regularly!

    I don’t eat honey is there anyway I can take the honey up of your recipes and replace it with liquid stevia or eryrithiol (sp?)? What sprinkles do you use since you don’t use sugar?

    I just made these and they came out perfect!! Do not forget to grease the pan!!
    The second batch I made I was low on almond flour so I replaced the 3/4 cup almond flour with 1/3 cup almond flour and 3 Tablespoons coconut flour and made 6 donuts instead of 8 and they are wonderful!!!
    I also used light and dark cocoa to give them a more robust chocolate taste as I am a dark chocolate lover.

    These are amazing!! I was skeptical about the yield being 8 donuts because I was looking at a similar recipe that called for 2.5 cups almond flour to apparently yield that same amount, and I was also a little nervous because the batter was much thinner than my usual donut recipe batter… But lo and behold, this recipe yielded 8 perfect donuts! Tender, subtly sweet, and so delicious. The only thing I changed was to use a little coconut sugar mixed with water because I had only about 1 Tbsp of honey in my pantry. They are amazing, and I really don’t think anyone would know they were GF! The crumb is so tender.
